Ellenzie Kerr of Chelsea is one goal shy of Fran Kirby's record and plans an emotional farewell at home against Manchester United.
with the goals that would enable her to leave, fittingly, as the Blues’ all-time top scorer. The 32-year-old looks forward to an emotional farewell at Stamford Bridge, which is set to become ‘ Samford Bridge ’ for the day on Saturday as she plays her 158th and last game against Manchester United,Yet to cap a record-breaking career at the London giants, where she’s won 11 trophies and twice been fitted with the Golden Boot as the WSL’s top scorer, Kerr has her eyes set on one final crowning landmark.
With 115 goals under her belt, she’s just one short of matching Chelsea’s record scorer Fran Kirby -- and that milestone is definitely in her sights.
“’That’s what I love doing - breaking records and scoring goals,’ Kerr told the club’s website on the eve of the match. “To be a part of Chelsea’s history is something that I’ll be forever proud of and it means a lot. “It’s kind of fitting playing Man United too.
They’re a team that we’ve had so many great memories together against, and hopefully we can continue to do that and have a win at the weekend to send me off.
“For me, it’s just about having fun one last time. I don’t want to make it sad. We’ve shared so many great memories together, and I just want to remember the good times. ” Her teammates are keen to give her the perfect send-off too.
“I am just hoping for us to be able to celebrate Sam in the best way possible,” manager Sonia Bompastor said on Friday. “First of all we need to win to make sure we finish in the highest place, but also we want to give Sam the best recognition she deserves at a personal and professional level.
” Another Matilda who’ll be having an emotional farewell to her WSL club will be Katrina Gorry, the 33-year-old midfielder who’ll be saying goodbye to West Ham in their last match of the season at home to new champions Manchester City. A hugely popular figure at the Hammers, Gorry has decided not to take up a new contract with the London club.
“It’s an emotional time to be leaving West Ham, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family,” said Gorry, mother to two young children. “I’ve enjoyed so many incredible moments over the last two and a half years, and captaining this team has been the greatest honour.
