Telco authorites are sitting on 100 million 05 mobile numbers, but they may not now be needed for a decade

Australia's supply of "04" mobile phone numbers is likely to last at least another decade, defying previous predictions about their limited longevity because customers' demand for new numbers unexpectedly dropped off.

"The ACMA closely monitors the supply of all numbers. Based on current demand, 04 mobile numbers should last at least another 10 years," a spokeswoman said."The ACMA has made provision for a further 100 million 05 numbers, which it will make available to telcos when supply of the 04 numbers runs low.

The largest number of allocations in one year was in 2010, when 6.9 million were provided. Numbers dropped soon after, hitting a low of 240,000 in 2017. Allocations spiked again in 2019, with 2.7 million made available. Communications Alliance chief executive John Stanton said various factors had since reduced demand, including "market saturation" for voice communications, with anyone who wanted more than one phone typically already having them.
