Queensland’s ability to fight fires has come under scrutiny after it was reported that 10,000 volunteer firefighters across four years have quit the RFSQ (Rural Fire Service Queensland). This has left just 26,000 firefighters to help protect more than 90 per cent of the state from bushfires. Despite the dwindling numbers, the government claims the state is well prepared to handle the upcoming season. The concerns follow a weekend of severe fire conditions which saw some residents evacuating.

A total fire ban has been declared for Sydney, the Blue Mountains, as well as the Central and South Coasts the first in almost three years. “Conditions are very dry now; we’ve gone from really wet conditions over the past few years to now really dry,” Mr Rogers told Sky News Australia. 'It is concerning; we’re certainly not saying though, it’s not the same risk as 2019-20 but we absolutely need to take this seriously. “We need the community to be very vigilant, if you see a fire and no fire track at it please report it to 000, don’t assume someone else has done it.”
