Booksmart Booksmart follows the formula of a classic coming-of-age drama, telling the story of two close friends on their final day before graduation as they attempt to capitalize on the end of their childhoods and attend their first house party. It has all the markings of the genre, but director Olivia Wilde manages to separate it from everything that’s come beforehand and give it a fresh spin that only works for this specific generation.
Waves Trey Edward Shults’ Waves is one of the more serious and important movies that deal with Gen Z characters, ditching the comedy and replacing it with a more emotional, poetic navigation of death and grief. The story follows a young boy named Tyler who’s forced to grapple with an enormous loss and consequently loses himself in a journey of romance, guilt, and forgiveness that’s extremely telling of the issues that face countless young adults of this generation.
