CLEVELAND, Ohio -- I had never seen a bike-specific traffic light before, let alone used a two-stage left-turn bike box. As a novice cyclist, I was learning on the fly as I cruised across the Detroit-Superior Bridge toward downtown.
Fortunately, I was riding with bike attorney Ken Knabe, who was filming a commuter safety video for cleveland.com. Ken is Managing Partner ofCycling Rights: Bicycles, E-Bikes & Micro-Mobility DevicesWhile we stopped at the red light, Ken explained that a two-stage bike box allows cyclists to safely make a left turn without having to cross multiple lanes of traffic from the bike lane.
Our cyclist traffic light turned green and we rode across West 9th Street and stopped where two green boxes were painted onto the pavement. We pointed our bikes to the left and waited, much like a pedestrian, for the West 9th Street traffic light to turn green. Once it did, we rode across the intersection and continued riding into the Warehouse District.
Prior to the cyclist light and bike boxes being installed, riders from Ohio City trying to make a left turn onto West 9th had to cross multiple lanes and make a potentially dangerous turn with traffic. For bike commuters and people considering riding on busy streets, the hazards involved call for caution and education.
