The 2000s were an excellent time for original horror movies. As society moves back into a horror movie renaissance, there are plenty to revisit.

During the 2000s, there was no shortage of horror movies, and now that society is loving horror movies again, a lot of these should be revisited. From 1931's Frankenstein to 1973's The Exorcist horror movies have been an important part of pop culture for decades. However, there have been eras where they were more prominent than others. The 70s and 80s saw iconic horror films like Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, while the late 90s launched the iconic Scream franchise.

9 The Strangers Bryan Bertino's 2008 film The Strangers is arguably one of the scariest films of the 2000s. In 2018, Johannes Roberts directed The Strangers: Prey at Night, but the storyline was a little different. The original film follows couple James and Kristen, whose relationship is on the rocks after Kristen turns down James' marriage proposal.

7 Shutter 2008's Shutter was based on a Thai film of the same name. The movie follows a married couple, Ben and Jane, moving to Japan for Ben's photography career. However, when they get there, Ben is haunted by his ex-girlfriend, Megumi, who is seemingly out to get the innocent man and his wife, who knows nothing about their past relationship.

5 The Grudge Sony Pictures green-lit The Grudge after the success of The Ring, since it's also a Japanese remake. The film has had two sequels and what was supposed to be a reboot in 2020 but changed directions. The film follows the curse of Kayako, who is often confused with Samara from The Ring as both characters have long, black hair. However, the plots are very different. The Grudge features a family living in a home where a murder-suicide took place.
