Names of residents of Mearns, which is now Newton Mearns, went viral after being posted on Twitter by Jack McLachlan.

An amateur historian has left people fascinated with a list of 100-year-old nicknames from a Scottish village.

Jack, of Fife, posted the list on his Old Weird Scotland Twitter account, which he started during the first coronavirus lockdown, and was swamped with positive responses from tickled Scots. Dr Cod McKinlay, Steak 'n' Kidney Murray, Willie "Boiler" Gill, Stainy Willie aka Auld History Stains, Bingy Close, Scud Crawford, Tory Malone Snig Banny aka Big Sandy, Whisky Rankin and Snek Raeburn were also unearthed by Jack.

Sue Lyons said: "When I moved to Caithness in 1997, soooo many people had by-names. I used to think these were their actual names and try to find them in the files only to find out they were called something else entirely." Laocoon said, "These are amazing.", and Remarkable Oyster commented on the uniqueness of them, saying: "And if they get called by one name, it's the first one. Steamie, Birdy, Icky. And everybody knows who you're referring to."

He is now in the process of writing a book as another way of sharing his interesting findings with others. He told the Record: "Like probably a lot of people, I got very little in the way of Scottish history at school.
