TxDOT plans $11.2M rebuild of Old Spanish Trail by MacGregor Park with new sidewalks, median
“The old roadway was overlaid at least twice, making curbs shorter than current design standards,” said Randall Dillard, a consultant on the project who narrated TxDOT’sFive-foot sidewalks will be built on both sides of the street, replacing the existing sidewalks, which are missing many segments. Work also will replace all of the ramps along local streets, making them comply with rules for disabled accessibility.
Sidewalks and ramps are part of efforts around the neighborhood to improve access to MacGregor Park, notably by Houston Southeast, the rebranded Greater Southeast Management District. The district also operates as the overseer of the city’s TIRZ 7, which reinvests property taxes in the area for public projects.
The management district, according to TxDOT, will maintain the new landscaped median, which will have curbs and trees similar to the median west of Griggs. To accommodate better pedestrian and cycling to the park, where the Houston Parks Board has plans for upgrades, TxDOT will install a pedestrian crossing of Old Spanish Trail near Belvedere Street.
The signal, similar to pedestrian crossings at parks and locations with busy foot traffic, will allows walkers and cyclists to activate the signal alerting drivers to stop.
