Bexar prosecutors — quite a few of them — are seeking judge seats

Assistant district attorneys Brandon Ramsey, left, and Lauren Zamora confer during a 2019 murder trial. Zamora is one of 11 Bexar County District Attorney’s Office prosecutors running for judgeships this year.

“I didn’t have anything to do with employees’ decisions to run,” he said. “They have the right to run.” During his unsuccessful campaign for a judgeship, Gonzales said, he and his wife “lived paycheck to paycheck.” He decided that if he ever became the DA, he would not punish his employees for doing the same thing.

This year, six of Gonzales’ prosecutors are running in the March 1 primary for county court-at-law seats: Democrats Andrea Arevalos, Melissa Saenz, Oscar Salinas, Michael Villarreal, and Lauren D. Zamora; and Republican Brandon Jackson. Salinas, 33, said he’s vying to unseat Judge Yolanda Huff in County Court-at-Law No. 12 because he has an interest in mental health and family violence — the two “are entwined,” he said. Salinas criticized Huff, for, along with another misdemeanor court, not taking more family violence cases to ease the backlog.

She said observing the criminal courts “opened my eyes to reform efforts” that can improve the bail system and create efficiencies.Escalona, 45, is running for the 186th District Court bench, which will be vacated with the retirement of Judge Jefferson Moore. She will face Republican Daphine Previti Austin in the general election.
