There’s been an unfortunately high number of movies throughout history where, no matter how impressive or popular the story is, its release has ultimately been overshadowed by the success of another project. This can happen for a number of different reasons: maybe the two films are too similar in themes and style, or maybe one has been building excitement for a little bit longer.
10 LA Confidential VS Titanic James Cameron’s Titanic is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, and it was a huge phenomenon upon release in 1997, with audiences famously visiting theaters multiple times just to watch the movie on the big screen. However, Titanic’s success actually doomed another great project that could’ve been a massive hit if it had been released at any other time: Curtis Hanson’s LA Confidential.
6 The Thin Red Line VS Saving Private Ryan Another case of two movies that are just slightly too similar, The Thin Red Line and Saving Private Ryan actually cannibalized each other's box office success in 1998. By releasing at the same time, the movies essentially forced the audience into choosing which of the two war movies they wanted to watch - and Spielberg’s involvement in Saving Private Ryan was enough to seal the deal for most.
