Nearly a dozen Mornington Peninsula homes have been deemed uninhabitable after a landslide that tipped a home over a seaside cliff.

Emergency services expect the McCrae landslide will soon move again when thunderstorms lash the area on Wednesday, putting more homes at risk the day afterOn Wednesday morning, State Emergency Service controller Mark Daw said Point Nepean Road will likely be closed for at least a week as geotechnical engineers work to stabilise the landslip on the Mornington Peninsula. An injured council worker remains at Frankston Hospital.

“Site assessments will continue today and the site will be monitored for any further subsidence caused by the storms forecast this afternoon,” the advice message said. He said council assessors tested the hillside after a smaller landslip a week ago, but was surprised by the size of Tuesday’s collapse.Daw said the SES previously responded to smaller landslides in the local area, “but nothing of this scale, this is a whole new thing for us”.

Several neighbours told this masthead that they had pleaded with Mornington Peninsula Shire and South East Water for years to address water issues near their homes.the head of civil engineering at Monash University, said these signs highlighted high-risk areas, although exact prediction was tricky.
