Which Stephen King characters are the scariest?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Stephen King’s novels have been adapted into some of the most iconic horror movies ever made, and they’re full of terrifying characters that haunted audiences’ dreams, like The Shining’s Jack Torrance and It’s Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Brian De Palma adapted King’s debut novel Carrie for the screen just two years after its publication, and became the first of more than 100 adaptations of King’s work.
Mrs. Carmody The main villainous forces in The Mist are the Lovecraftian creatures that emerge from the eponymous fog, but the true monster in this story is Mrs. Carmody. Mrs. Carmody is a devout Christian and believes that the mist and its monsters are a punishment from God for the sins of humankind. She tries to convince everyone else in the supermarket that the mist is an act of divine punishment, but they’d rather get killed by the Tentacles from Planet X than listen to her.
Cujo A mother and son are attacked by the titular rabid St. Bernard in Cujo. Most movies about dogs let their dog characters be adorable and harmless, but this one is the total opposite. Cujo is a bloodthirsty hound who will stop at nothing to kill his chosen human prey. The dogs who played Cujo had a blast making the movie, to the point that their wagging tails had to be taped down, but thanks to the magic of filmmaking, he still reads as a terrifying presence in the finished movie.
Jack Torrance In King’s source material for The Shining, Jack Torrance is a good man who’s driven to do bad things by the ghosts in the Overlook Hotel. But in Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation, Jack is already a bad man who hates his family, and it might be the isolation alone that drives him to try to kill them at the Overlook, which is infinitely more terrifying and real. Jack Nicholson nails the character’s descent into madness, and his axe-wielding rampage in the final reel is truly iconic.
