From strawberry blonde to rich auburn, every tone of red hair imaginable blazed across the AW22 catwalks.
Making up less than two per cent of the global population, redheads have been a source of fascination for millennia, depicted variously as mysterious and seductive, bold and dangerous – especially to those who fall for their charms. Aristotle associated tawny locks with bravery and pure red hair with cunning while ancient Hebraic texts describe Lilith, Adam’s wife before marrying Eve, as having a copper mop.
In medieval Europe, meanwhile, perceived ties between red hair and dark magic resulted in thousands of “witches” being burned alive. Shakespeare, too, frequently gave his villains red hair, including the infamous Caliban, even while his patron Elizabeth I’s ginger mane became an emblem of her strength – much like that earlier British queen, Boudica, whose red tresses came to her knees according to contemporary Roman accounts.
And while there’s been much chat about the fact that redheads are dying out, you would never know it from the Paris Fashion Week runways. From strawberry blonde to cherry red, every tone imaginable . Considering a bold dye job? Look back at the greatest redheads on screen through the years for inspiration.
