The Great War of 1914-18—the “war to end all wars” that was later demoted to being merely World War I—was so convoluted in its causes and confounding in its execution that it has proved a source of endless fascination, study, confusion and the inspiration for some classic ruminations: Barbara Tuchman’s “The Guns of August,” for instance, or Paul Fussell’s “The Great War and Modern Memory.” Those books, by necessity, took the broadest overview of the conflict.
