“What we know officially at this point from the State Department is that Andy and Alex are missing,” Huynh's fiancee told Reuters. “We do not have confirmation for anything beyond that.”
Huynh, 27, of Lawrence County, left the U.S. in early April to fight with Ukrainian forces. The son of Vietnamese immigrants, he had served as a U.S. Marine for four years and, before his departure, was a student at Calhoun Community College.he enlisted into the Marines when he was 19 and served on a base in Okinawa, Japan but never saw active combat.
Drueke’s mother, Bunny Drueke, said in a statement that she last spoke to her son June 5, and he texted her three days later to tell her he would be “going dark for almost all of tomorrow.
The two men, who reportedly did not know each other before traveling to Ukraine, went missing during the battle and subsequent search missions failed to find any remains, “As you can imagine, his loved ones are very concerned about him,” Aderholt said in a statement. “My office has placed inquires with both the United States Department of State and the Federal Bureau of Investigation trying to get any information possible.”
