Phoenix police said they had detained three men, but later determined one was not actively involved in the incident. The staff had minor injuries.

Two patients at the Arizona State Hospital were arrested after they refused to let three employees leave and injured them on Monday, according to Phoenix police.

McCarthy and Moors were forensic patients, according to the ADHS. McCarthy was serving a mandatory sentence at the mental hospital. Court documents state McCarthy assaulted the man first and allegedly told police he did it out of anger. Then he assaulted the two women, who were trying to stop him and Moors from assaulting their co-worker.

After breaking the machine, court records say McCarthy used a broken piece of metal to hit and damage plexiglass that was between him and medical staff. The damages to the machine and the plexiglass cost about $7,365.
