Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, began erupting Sunday for the first time in nearly four decades, and nearby Kilauea has been erupting for the past year.

The lava is contained within its crater, the U.S. Geological Survey has said.
“While an eruption is an exciting experience, keep in mind you are observing a sacred event,” the National Park service said in a statement. “Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcano are wahi kapu surrounded with storied places. Your visit can be more meaningful by learning about the deep connections between Native Hawaiian culture and this landscape.”
