As the American Film Institute's 20-year-old poll suggests, one surprising actor surpassed Harrison Ford as the greatest hero in the film industry.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT AFI's 20-year-old poll reveals that a surprising Hollywood star beat Harrison Ford as the greatest actor in the history of cinema. Based in Los Angeles, the American Film Institute is a non-profit film organization dedicated to developing and sustaining film and television in the United States.
One such list curated by the AFI was titled "AFI's 100 YEARS...100 HEROES & VILLAINS." As the title itself suggests, the list features a detailed rundown of the 50 top movie heroes and 50 top movie villains of all time. To get selected for the list, the hero or villain in consideration had to be a part of a feature-length American film, had to be a bona fide hero or villain by definition, and should have had a cultural impact and legacy.
At number 5, the list features Gary Cooper's noble lawman character, Marshal Will Kane, from iconic Western High Noon. Lou Gehrig, who Cooper portrayed with compelling depth and sensitivity in sports biopic The Pride of the Yankees, ranks at 25. Finally, the biographical drama Sergeant York, in which Cooper wonderfully played war hero Alvin C. York, takes the 35th position, making him the only actor with three movies on AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains list.
Gary Cooper's Surprising Awards Recognition Sets Him Apart From Other Actors' Greatest Heroes Two of Harrison Ford's characters, Han Solo from Star Wars and Indian Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark, are also on the list. However, what sets Gary Cooper apart from Ford and all the other actors whose characters have made it to the list is the long catalog of accolades he has won for portraying the heroes in High Noon, The Pride of the Yankees, and Sergeant York.
The awards Gary Cooper won for the characters he played in all three movies on AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains prove he did not merely land well-written characters in great movies. Instead, he enhanced the narrative heft of his characters and brought new life to them on the big screen with his acting talent.
