Morecambe's fatal cockle picking tragedy paved way for helping modern slavery victims - now it's all at risk
A group of illegal migrants were unwittingly sent to their deaths by their gangmasters as they were ordered out for their regular work as cockle pickers.
Those 23 people, many of whom had sons, daughters and spouses back in China, had been trafficked into dangerous and gruelling work in order to send small amounts of money to their families. One horrifying detail is that their families had to continue paying thousands of pounds back to the people who led them to their deaths.
That has seemingly weakened support for those at risk of abuse and forced labour and policies such as the much-opposed Rwanda exports are not the only obstacles which campaigners fear will hurt deeply vulnerable people. Also attracting much anger and fear is the proposed Illegal Migration Bill. She said: “I know that ministers have said this Bill will enable more perpetrators to be stopped, but on modern slavery I genuinely believe it will do the opposite. It will enable more slave drivers to operate and make money out of human misery, it will consign more people to slavery.”
"Introduced by the then-Home Secretary Theresa May, one of the Act's key insights was that gangs used the threat of deportation as a way to control their victims, and that survivors would only come forward and speak to the police if they felt safe to do so. It also recognised that if victims were not supported in this way, they often ended up back in the clutches of traffickers.
“As Theresa May pointed out in Parliament this week, this does nothing to help prosecute the people exploiting them, let alone give them a chance of rebuilding their life again. Today we don't often hear about undocumented Chinese workers, but there are plenty of cases of people trafficked from countries such as Vietnam, Albania and Nigeria.
