Britney Spears and denim cut-off skirts – what’s not to love?
, childhood friends Lucy , Kit , and Mimi reunite for a cross-country road trip. They don’t really have a plan, and certainly don’t have a lot of money, but theyhave a sense of adventure. The film follows the cliché that life is about the journey, not the destination – though , Lucy ends up destined for pop superstardom. But it’s also just as much about the outfits they wore along the way. Their road trip style surprisingly still holds up over 20 years after the film’s release.
Costume designer Wendy Schecter gave each of the three main characters their own sense of style. Lucy, the girl-next-door, has a sweet, all-American vibe . She’ll wear a vintage-looking Southern Jaguars football tee, or cutesy bucket hats paired with a classic denim jacket. Kit, meanwhile, is more feminine and plays with tube tops and slinky tanks. Mimi is decidedly spunkier with her rock band tees and bandana headscarves.
