2019, a year in review, in tourism: the year European cities decided to limit the number of visitors arriving on its docks and runways

, such as Amsterdam, after projections predicted a 50% increase in tourism from 18 million in 2017 to 29 million in 2030. Its original plan to advertise Amsterdam as a tourist hotspot has been incredibly successful and now the priority has shifted to maintain its cultural character and keep it accessible for locals . It also hopes that by limiting the people coming into the country, it can meet its waste and CO2 emissions reduction targets.
Cultural arguments also weigh heavy, with detractors arguing that there isn’t enough room for the locals to live. In Venice, the ratio of tourists to locals is too large in many places to support local services. In 1965, the population was 122,000 but it now sits at 54,000, because most people are unable to afford local housing. Many councillors are calling for an entrance fee to the city, in line with tourists repeatedly asking “what time does Venice close”.
