No matter how you choose to look at the offense, there are plenty of reasons for optimism this season.

If the pundits are to be believed, then Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert could be an MVP candidate this season while directing an offense that, as someone pointed out, puts up points like a video game. A less hyperbolic view is that the Chargers will be very, very good offensively.

The Chargers’ offensive line is improved with the addition of rookie right guard Zion Johnson, a man defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko joked “was created in a lab.” At least we think Fehoko was joking after going against Johnson almost every day during training camp last month. After all, there is no replacing Herbert, who established himself as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks in his record-setting 2021 season. It’s not fair to say the Chargers’ success or failure rests entirely on the broad shoulders of Herbert, but they kind of do, don’t they?
