Lib Dems and Greens are toasting electoral successes across England as Labour and Tories suffer losses. Tories have lost flagship Wandsworth and Westminster council in London and also relinquish Southampton. But results so far have not been as apocalyptic as feared and Labour has not turned in a stellar performance.
Cabinet are set to rally round Boris Johnson as the 'right leader' to steer Britain after the local elections. Ministers will hit the airwaves to argue he should stay on as PM - no matter how bad the poll results are.
