Said bumpers are punctuated by tow-hook covers in a rather useful shade of yellow. Similar-color trim highlights the roof rack, making the Crosstrek Wilderness look as if it's been marked up for 3D movement modeling. Subaru, your mission of making this the most distinctive Wilderness model has been well and truly accomplished—we're as unlikely to mistake this for an ordinary Crosstrek as we are to mistake a dirt road for a meatball.
Inside the cabin, the changes are more subtle, with additional yellow accents throughout the cabin and embossed headrests. The seats are upholstered in water-resistant fabric, and all-weather floormats are part of the package. Having muddied more than our fair share of Subarus, we can appreciate these nods to functionality.And muddying this baby is something you most definitely will want to do. The Wilderness version of the Crosstrek gets a half-inch increase in ground clearance to 9.
Under the hood is the more powerful of the Crosstrek's two engine options, the 182-hp, 176-lb-ft 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder. The Wilderness gets a lower final drive ratio , and the CVT automatic is retuned for better low-speed performance. Towing capacity is up, too; with the addition of a transmission oil cooler, the Crosstrek Wilderness can tow an impressive 3,500 pounds, more than double the capacity of lesser Crosstreks.
Subaru has priced the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness at $33,290, with a pack of standard equipment including LED headlights that steer with the wheels, dual-zone climate control, and a cold-weather package consisting of heated seats, windshield, and mirrors. A $2,270 option package adds a moonroof, a power driver's seat, and an upgraded stereo. Expect the 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness to bash its way into Subaru showrooms this fall.
