The 97th Academy Awards nominations are in, and there are plenty of talking points. From the record-breaking success of Emilia Pérez to the surprising snubs of Jamie Lee Curtis and Margaret Qualley, this year's race is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable yet.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on the evening of March 2, or in the morning of March 3 for those in Australia. In one of the season's most baffling trajectories, Netflix's Spanish-language musical, Emilia Pérez, has once again dominated with 13 nominations — the most of any foreign-language film ever (sorry, Parasite). Lead Karla Sofía Gascón has also made Oscars history as the first openly trans woman to be nominated for an Oscar.

Not far behind were three-and-a-half-hour post-war drama The Brutalist and sparkling Broadway adaptation Wicked (talk about your Elphaba and Glinda pairs) on 10 nominations each. In just over a month, we'll find out who is crowned supreme in this year's awards race but, until then, let's dive into the snubs, surprises and successes from the 2025 Oscar nominations.\Two years ago, scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis grabbed the Oscar in this category for her (very fine) performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which many believe should have gone to her co-star Stephaine Hsu for her (much, much finer) performance. A lot of pundits were holding their breath for a repeat this year, as Curtis locked down BAFTA and SAG nominations for her work as a Vegas waitress in Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl. But despite her pedigree and the academy's love for her, Curtis remained absent from the category in 2025. Alas, so did fellow nepo baby Margaret Qualley for her outstanding and disgusting performance in The Substance — a surprise, considering her Golden Globe nomination. Last nepo baby standing is Isabella Rossellini for Conclave, but she'll have to trump Zoe Saldana's Golden-Globe-winning performance in Emilia Pérez.\Poor Dune: Part 2, cursed by a March 2024 release date, ie very early in the awards cycle. Recency bias is the only reason to explain why A Complete Unknown's James Mangold is on the Best Directing shortlist over Denis Villeneuve's masterful work on the sci-fi epic.Dune: Part 2 slithered into the Best Picture category, which is a win for all the spice heads out there, but it really shone in the technical categories. How do you ride a sandworm? The Aussie who won an Oscar for shooting 'unfilmable' movie Dune, explains Photo shows A man in a while shirt looks at the camera while standing in front of a film set in the desert From riding sandworms to creating an entire new planet, Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser shares how he created the look of Dune: Part Two. Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser, who won Best Cinematography in 2021 for the first Dune, secured another well-deserved nod in the category, making him our best bet for an Aussie taking home a gold statue. The film also snuck in for production design, sound and visual effects — here's hoping a sandworm will be on hand on the night to collect the award.would take up all five spots in Best Score. Especially considering the Golden Globes gave them the whole freaking award. But, in the clearest sign we have that the Academy voters have no ears, the pair didn't even get a look in for this year's nominees!! It's especially egregious if you've heard a single clip of the music in Emilia Peréz and the stilted, awkward dialogue they labour over it.\Surprise: The Substance makes up for every Oscars horror snub in the past 20 yearsWhen Demi Moore's character in The Substance turns 50, she gets fired. Then things get weird. The Substance has triumphantly slipped into Best Picture, something a horror movie hasn't achieved since Get Out in 2017. Coralie Fargeat's gory fable was so brash and ostentatious that not even the Academy's historical hatred for horror could keep it down. Not only that, but Fargeat broke into the Best Directing category, which is historically unkind to both horror films AND female directors. Of course, Demi Moore took her rightful spot in Best Actress nominations, her moving and impactful speech as she won the Golden Globe all but carving her name onto the Oscar. The Substance nabbed two other very-well-deserved nods, for original screenplay as well as make-up and hair styling. While many might not have had the stomach for The Substance, seeing the success of a horror film that literally drowns its audience in blood and gore is extremely heartening.\Photo shows A bald man with glasses smiles against a yellow backdrop. He's holding a claymation figurine in front of him on a wooden wheel.Best animation has pretty much been on a lock for the past couple of months, but there were some rumblings that Moana 2 could push its way into the category off the back of its billion-dollar box office earnings. And in a category of studio heavy-hitters and award winners, it looked as if sad-core claymation Memoir of a Snail by Aussie Adam Elliot could get the boot. But fans of local animation rejoiced as the snail slimed all over Moana 2 to lock down a spot in the top fiv
