“I wasn’t sure if I could make it the whole way. But after that first race, I wanted to do another one.”
When civil engineer Patrick Schwebeck beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1997, he picked up running with a new perspective.On September 8, Patrick Schwebeck, 51, ran down a familiar homestretch to the finish of the Sioux Falls Half Marathon, which he’s competed in every year for the past 20 years.
Over the next few months, he underwent several more rounds of treatment, and finally went into remission again later that year. But once the disease was gone, a new sickness took its place: severe pneumonia, which struck Schwebeck especially hard because of his weakened immune system.“I was 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds at the time, but when I got pneumonia, I dropped down to 128 pounds,” he said. “I didn’t have much more to lose.
