You might not think you want to watch an over 30 minute film analysis of the 2008 indie flopstarring Kirk Cameron, but with over 140,000 views on YouTube, Maggie Mae Fish is proving there is a market for comedic film analysis. Between her past work with the humor site Cracked.com and now her own YouTube channel, Fish has been making jokes about how we watch movies and TV while simultaneously working on her own projects.
27-year-old Fish is a writer, comedian, commentator and actress. Fish has been featured on CollegeHumor, Screenjunkies and JASH. She was also a former lead actor and writer at Cracked.com. She has appeared on the DreamWorks children’s show. She has been an improviser both at iO Chicago and Second City Chicago.
After majoring in theater in college, Fish thought she was headed to a career as a serious actress; however, she gravitated towards improv after desiring to work with a team. “I love teamwork and working together,” she says. “Now I am moving towards working in TV and I see the similarities where everyone has to contribute to a final product.” While she may have started in live performance, Fish quickly moved to making videos to upload online.
Fish has been making comedy online for her whole career and it has influenced her process. “When I am making comedy [online], I think about how it is going to be seen by a wide audience,” she says. “There is a balance. It has to be filled with my voice, represent my comedy style well, and I want to be passionate about everything I say in the video while recognizing it’s a large audience. However many people like it, there will probably be that same amount of people that don’t.
While Fish is still making videos for her YouTube, she is also working on longer form pieces. In addition to a recently written full length feature script, she is developing a new TV show based on a year she worked as a nanny for a wealthy family. “Early on [in my career], I really took to Twitter because I really liked the limited format,” she explains.
