Trump tried to deflect attention to Biden as House Democrats push forward with an impeachment inquiry.
by saying he wants to release records from the first call he had with Ukraine’s president in April after he was elected. At the same time, Trump also demanded “transparency” from Biden and other Democratic lawmakers who also threatened Ukraine if the country’s officials didn’t root out corruption.
Democrats say they’re concerned about the call because Trump singled out a political rival while previous diplomacy with Ukraine did not. “I fully support transparency on so-called whistleblower information but also insist on transparency from Joe Biden and his son Hunter, on the millions of dollars that have been quickly and easily taken out of Ukraine and China,” Trumpbefore the press conference. “Additionally, I demand transparency from Democrats that went to Ukraine and attempted to force the new President to do things that they wanted under the form of political threat.
It should be noted that calls for transparency may ring hollow, especially since the the White House reportedly stonewalled Congress from seeing the full complaint when it first became public. The White House released the full complaint to lawmakers right before Trump’s press conference, days after the story first broke.Trump said that he didn’t threaten anyone, echoing how Ukraine’s president responded to the incident earlier Wednesday.
