The 3-year-old son of a Florida corrections officer fatally shot himself in the face Wednesday night with a handgun he found in a nightstand drawer at a home near DeLand, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

A deputy got on scene and administered CPR on the boy, who was deceased, and the child was then taken to AdventHealth DeLand, Chitwood said.

Detectives investigating the tragic shooting incident learned that the parents of the boy had gone food shopping at a Publix and left the 3-year-old and another 8-year-old boy in the care of their 16-year-old sister. A second firearm, a Glock, was also located on the top of the refrigerator. An inoperable safe was found in the home and detectives are working to determine how long the safe has not been working, the sheriff said.
