Sutherland Shire Council received hundreds of complaints after publishing draft research showing15,600 properties were at risk of flood.
A disputed council study into flood risks sucked millions of dollars out of the community in lost property values and hiked insurance premiums, Sutherland Shire residents believe.
The council had skimped on a community consultation process before releasing the study, documents released under freedom of information laws show, and was hit with an unprecedented deluge of complaints when the study was made public in October. She ended up having to sell the property, which had the potential to be rebuilt as a duplex, for $300,000 less than the listed price.
“Finally, the broad-scale nature of the study and project time and budget constraints are generally considered to preclude a comprehensive community engagement program,” said the document, which was obtained under freedom of information rules. A lack of awareness in the community appears to have contributed to the alarmed response from people issued with flood notices.
Insurance companies do factor in council-backed flood research when determining premiums, but it is not clear if all the premium rises in affected parts of the council area are attributed to the flood risk study.
