Big betting companies will join the AFL and NRL bosses for a government grilling this week, with $300m in betting advertising at risk.

, Entain director Steven Lang and Responsible Wagering Australia chairman Nick Minchin will also give evidence at the review, which is looking at consumer protections around gambling and whether current rules limiting betting ads shown to children across social media, sponsorship and branding are working.

An overly broad crackdown on gambling advertising will also be a blow to the major football codes, whose lucrative multi-billion dollar rights deals are underpinned by giving broadcasters the chance to recoup the costs of the contracts through advertising revenue and sponsorships. TV ratings data from OzTam, provided to the inquiry by Free TV, showed those under 18 make up 4 per cent of the commercial TV audience each day, and 2.9 per cent of the audience after 10.30pm.In its submission to the inquiry, Free TV wrote that more restrictions on betting ads “would have significant revenue implications for Australian TV networks and their ability to invest in sports; news and current affairs; and Australian content”.
