Those presentations, which were scheduled to run through March, were canceled.
The theater master plan received criticism from some City Council members during a Jan. 17 meeting, with several saying they supported restoring the more than 60-year-old building but wanted less costly options to get there. They questioned where the money would come from to pay for the project and expressed concern that the master plan’s scope went beyond just rehabbing the theater.
A task force of city Arts and Culture Advisory Commission members in 2019 recommended a lease renewal for the Dallas Theater Center at the Kalita Humphreys Theater including a mandate that the DTC update the 2010 master plan for the theater and the surrounding park land. The site is a designated Dallas landmark, still owned by the city and leased to the Dallas Theater Center for $1 a year to manage the nearly 500-seat venue. But neglect and lack of investment have led to the theater falling into disrepair.
