Los expertos de la Organización Mundial de Salud y los Centros de Control y Prevención de Enfermedades están atentos a más variantes a las cuales llaman “variantes de interés” .

Al igual que las “variantes preocupantes”, las VOI pueden ser más contagiosas, capaces de evadir el sistema inmunológico, más resistentes a los tratamientos disponibles o más difíciles de detectar. Las VOI son “de interés” para ciertos países según las tasas de infección, por lo que algunas VOI se enumeran en el sitio web de los CDC, pero no en el de la OMS, y viceversa.

El 30 de agosto, la OMS agregó la variante Mu a su lista de VOI , que incluye la Eta, Iota, Kappa y Lambda. Las otras variantes de interés según la OMS o los CDC son las variantes Eta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda y sin nombre .La variante Mu se secuenció por primera vez en Colombia en enero de 2021. Se ha documentado en 39 países, incluido Estados Unidos, donde los casos en California y Florida se vincularon a viajes desde Sudamérica.
