The U.S. Coast Guard says it is searching for four people who were aboard a helicopter that crashed Thursday morning in the Gulf of Mexico after departing an oil and gas platform.
The helicopter went down about 10 miles off the shore of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Petty Officer Jose Hernandez, a spokesman for the Coast Guard’s 8th District headquartered in New Orleans. He said the Coast Guard had found no sign of the pilot and three platform workers as evening approached.
Houston-based Walter Oil and Gas operates the platform the helicopter took off from, according to Hernandez. No one answered the phone at the company’s Houston headquarters Thursday afternoon, and an email request for comment was not immediately returned. Hernandez said weather didn’t appear to be a factor in the crash, and there were no reports of storms in the area Thursday.
