It's his 40th harvest, 40 years of natural winemaking. Tony Coturri speaks about regenerative farming practices, which many see as a way to reverse climate change

Courtesy Tony Coturrikicked off the 40th harvest on his property on Sonoma Mountain above Glen Ellen. His biodynamic vineyards sit in a wild area bordered by a stream in a region known as Valley of the Moon.

I asked him if he thought that first harvest felt like yesterday or if it had been a long 40 years. “A long 40 years,” said Coturri. “In 1979 to do organic, natural wine was so revolutionary, it was really difficult.” “The most expensive operation is weeds in the vine row,” says Coturri, who maintains cover crop in his vineyards. “Now I’m just letting it grow, then it falls over.” He says this may be “untidy looking” but the low touch approach means that the vegetation protects the soil and invites beneficial insects. Plus, it puts nutrients back into the ground.
