49ers’ Clelin Ferrell, former Raiders top pick, pushes for starting spot

SANTA CLARA — Freed from the weight of expectations and given carte blanche to simply read and react, 49ers defensive end Clelin Ferrell goes back to Las Vegas this week without a tinge of bitterness or regret.

His selection was mostly panned, though, by draft analysts who didn’t think believe he was worth being selected No. 4 after Kyler Murray , Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams . As for Ferrell, the Raiders declined his fifth-year option, and he signed a one-year contract with the 49ers that will pay him $2.5 million should he meet per-game roster bonuses.

The Raiders never had an issue with Ferrell’s effort or attitude, which were as advertised and exemplary. When free agency beckoned, two former Raiders teammates — defensive end Arden Key and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst — lobbied on behalf of the 49ers and line coach Kris Kocurek. “Those guys gave me some reassurance about just trusting in what we do here as a team,” Ferrell said. “It gave me some inside information, but every team is different and I’m a new fish out there.”“If you really respect this game and do what they say and do it to the best of your abilities, everything will pan out,” Ferrell said.“I think Coach Kris has been really, really big for me, just from the aspect of taking a lot of the thinking and reading out of my game,” Ferrell said.
