Dre Greenlaw is flying under the radar in a national sense as one of the top linebackers in the NFL.
SANTA CLARA – Dre Greenlaw admitted he approached the great Tom Brady “like a little fan.” He intercepted a pass from a living legend and wanted it autographed.
What Greenlaw is doing this season is so special, 49ers general manager John Lynch invoked the name of a revered first-ballot Hall of Fame teammate from Tampa Bay during a weekly KNBR appearance. “Fred is one of the best players in football. I think he’s showing that,” Lynch said. “But I’ll tell you, he’s got competition here of late with Dre Greenlaw.”
He played it safe as instructed by the coaches when the 49ers piled up a big lead against the Bucs, staying back and rallying up for safe tackles rather than hunting for big blows. The 49ers, according to coach Kyle Shanahan, had a third-round grade on Greenlaw but didn’t take him that high because they’d already signed free agent Kwon Alexander. When Greenlaw lasted until the fifth, the 49ers selected him at No. 148.
