It's Australian music's biggest month of the year. These albums give you five great ways to celebrate.
November is Ausmusic Month and, as such, our regular album review column will be 100 per cent Australian artists for the entire month.
It isn't merely nostalgic pastiche. The drum breaks, builds, drops and wobbly synths have been brewed into refreshing concoctions ConMan have themselves dubbed "bubblegum warehouse". As it stands, 3AM legitimises Confidence Man as more than just a great live show and makers of eye-grabbing music videos. They offer some of the best dance-induced highs you can have without touching illicit substances.Cartoon Darkness is a way of describing our dystopian present, singer Amy Taylor explained to Double J in a recent interview.
Guitarist Declan Mehrtens sets aside scorching solos to break out acoustic guitar and whistling on 'Bailing On Me'. There's even vocoder and a disco beat for playful highlight 'Me And The Girls'. She's comfiest delivering with a bratty snarl but Taylor also tries on a playful baby-doll persona for 'Tiny Bikini' and a lower-register croon on the slower, melodic 'Big Dreams' that resembles Courtney Barnett.
'Wamud' tells the true story of a promising young hunter, 'Na-meyarra' was inspired by the lands of the Na-kara people, while 'Makéddja' was inspired by turtle hunting. Hearing these stories, even when sung in language, gives us a more intimate understanding of Arnhem Land life, and will leave you feeling perhaps surprisingly fulfilled.
There's also a distinctly Australian flavour to much of what's here, partly down to Swayze's vocal delivery, though more broadly thanks to the energy the whole band provides. 'He Is Dead' sounds like something that would make Midnight Oil proud, while 'Before I Left' has Swayze channelling The Saints' Chris Bailey at his most disaffected before it evolves into a kind of gothy rave-up.
