Strange New Worlds delivered more backstory about Uhura than Star Trek: The Original Series ever gave the Enterprise's Communications Officer.
One of the great strengths of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the way that it adds further depth to characters from Star Trek: The Original Series like Lieutenant Nyota Uhura Celia Rose Gooding plays a younger version of Uhura in Strange New Worlds, and her Cadet Uhura has received more character development than her predecessor in season 1.
Following the tragic deaths of her mother, father, and brother, Uhura moved in with her grandmother. Unsure of what to do after canceling her plans to study alien languages at the University of Nairobi, Uhura was eventually convinced of her next move by living with her grandmother, a former Starfleet Officer. Rather than study surrounded by the ghosts of her parents, Uhura decided to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother.
The decision to follow in her grandmother's footsteps didn't immediately solve Uhura's inner conflict. Although she had made it through Star Trek's Starfleet Academy to the point that she was assigned to the Enterprise as a cadet, Uhura still had reservations. Mirroring Nichelle Nichols' own doubts about staying in Star Trek, Uhura's SNW arc explored whether Starfleet was the right decision for the young cadet.
