While Los Angeles eagerly awaits the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards airing on Fox this Sunday, its often-overlooked precursor — the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — occurred over the weekend during a two-day ceremony at Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Unlike the star-studded Primetime Emmys, the less viewer-friendly award show primarily honors technical achievements in television.
Notably, Jane Lynch and Luke Kirby of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won for Outstanding Guest Actress and Actor in a Comedy Series, while Cherry Jones and Bradley Whitford of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” took home the equivalent for drama guest acting. Presenters included Jeff Goldblum, Laverne Cox, Will Arnett and “Game of Thrones” actor Alfie Allen , as well as up-and-coming actresses Maude Apatow and Sydney Sweeney of “Euphoria.
The big winners were: “Game of Thrones,” “Chernobyl,” “Free Solo,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Queer Eye,” “Saturday Night Live” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Also to note: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” took home a total of three awards, while “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” hosted by the late chef, received two Emmys. “Leaving Neverland,” the much-talked-about documentary on Michael Jackson’s relationship with young boys, now men who allege they were sexually abused by him as children, won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.
