White Christmas.
One of the most iconic songs of the Christmas Season is Bing Crosby’s white Christmas. Many kids dream of a white Christmas.showing probabilities of a White Christmas in the United States. It is one of the big questions asked every holiday season. The graphics and table below were created from historical data from NOAA'S National Climatic Data Center . It reflects the normal chance, or probability, of a white Christmas based on data from the 1981-2010 three-decade averages. A white Christmas is defined as having 1 inch or more of snow on the ground Christmas morning.
As you can see from the graphic above, those of us in the southern tier of the United States have a very low probability of snow on Christmas. The highest probabilities have clear relationships that any student of a 1000-level meteorology course will understand: elevation and latitude. The mountainous regions of the U.S. have some of the highest probabilities of snowfall. Temperature generally decreases with elevation.here’s the scoop on temperature and elevation.
The other relationship is latitude. Christmas Day falls a few days after the winter solstice. The winter solstice is the day with the least amount of daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere is tilting away from the sun while the Southern Hemisphere is tilting towards the sun . This is why snow and cold temperatures will always happen in December even as the climate warms. The axial tilt of the Earth as it revolves around the Sun determines seasons.
