“It’s about fashion, art, architecture, dance,” divulged the Serbian, architect-trained colourist.
Roksanda showcased her spring/summer 2023 collection inside Theaster Gates’sthe Chicago-based artist’s imposing yet reflective design for 2022’s Serpentine Pavilion. The show setting inside Kensington Gardens marked the fifth time that Ilinčić has presented her work within the pavilion . Gates is the first artist and non-architect to have been selected for the commission, and his vision was supported by Adjaye Associates. “I always mix different disciplines in my work,” Roksanda said.
“David Adjaye also designed my London flagship, which felt like a great connection.”Voluminous and cascading gowns in the collection had 3D elements which resembled unfurling abstract roses . These tactile details were inspired by previous silhouettes in Roksanda’s archives – including exaggerated sleeves – which were draped in the studio as toiles around mannequins and reimagined as embellishments. “The pieces are almost like collages,” Roksanda explained.
