5 things to watch on Election Day in the Texas governor's race between Gov. Abbott, Beto O'Rourke
After nearly two years of campaigning, the Texas governors race is finally about to be decided.
But O’Rourke won both during his 2018 U.S. Senate race. No Democratic candidate for governor has carried both those counties since Ann Richards in 1994, who also happens to be the last Democrat to win statewide. These diversifying and urbanizing counties have shifted quickly as voter registrations have surged over the last 6 years. In 2014, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn won these counties by almost 350,000 total votes. But in 2018, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz lost the same counties by 440,000 votes.
The challenge? O’Rourke won the five counties between Laredo and Brownsville by almost 70 percent in 2018. If O’Rourke isn’t winning these counties by at least 100,000 votes combined, he’s in trouble. With 2.5 million voters, how Harris County determines a lot about Texas politics. From 2010 to 2014, Republicans dominated the county, which led to lopsided blowouts statewide.
