The First Texas Cook Book
From the get-go, this book hooks the reader. The table of contents itself is riveting.
The bread chapter alone contains recipes from the traditional Buttermilk Biscuit to Corn Cakes, but then there is Rice Bread, Nice Bread and Hominy Bread. I had to stop and read through the recipes to wrap my mind around Graham Gems, Rusk, Parkin and Indian Bannock. The desserts abound with multiple recipes for Angel Food Cakes, Sponge Cakes and Charlotte Russe, differentiating them with only numbers. From custards to jellies, pies to puddings, one begins to long for dessert. I already have my eye on summer so I can make the Water Melon Cake and Brandied Peaches!
