These are sure to stir up a few '80s memories 😍

Looking back, it's fair to say that Glasgow in the 1980s was a city of contrasting fortunes.

On the one hand, there was much to be optimistic about, as the city looked to the future and sought to push forward with a brand new identity - and a slogan that declared: 'Glasgow's Miles Better'. Those who lived through the decade will recall the huge crowds that turned up to greet Pope John Paul II at Bellahouston Park in 1982, the opening of major new retail and leisure developments, such as the St Enoch Centre and SECC, and the utter joy generated by the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988.

But for many it was also a time of economic hardship. This was the Thatcher era, and, with unemployment at an all-time high, barely a month seemed to go by without a union dispute or major protest taking to the city's streets. We've trawled through the Mirrorpix archives to bring you 64 photographic memories that will bring you right back to Glasgow as it was in the 1980s.
