A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck southwestern Mexico on Monday, causing buildings to sway in the capital Mexico City and prompting evacuations. The tremor was southeast of La Placita de Morelos, in Michoacan state, more than 500 miles west of Mexico City, according to United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake was felt at 1:05 p.m. local time in the capital; Mexico City Mayor Claudia Shienbaum said no initial damage was reported. Buildings in the downtown area of the capital were evacuated. The shaking occurred only about an hour after the city held its annual earthquake drill to commemorate big quakes registered in 1985 and 2017.
