It's a lovely plant

It isn't often that NASA gets a name check when discussing banishing mould from your home. However, a plant that has been hailed for its benefits as well as its aesthetics was named by the US space agency as one of the best at air purification. What's even better is that you can pick up the practical plant from places like B&Q for just £7.

The benefits of keeping plants in your home are well documented. From brightening your day with a bloom to purifying the air, the green additions to your property go on. Some even consider certain plants to have 'luck' benefits. However, it is the peace lily that is hogging the limelight at the moment, with the Mirror reporting that the common houseplant can remove toxins from the air as well as helping to keep your home mould free, according to NASA research. A peace lily, so called because it is said to symbolise health and tranquillity, was described by the Mirror as thriving in bathrooms and bedrooms and helping "to improve air quality by removing dust and toxins from the air".

In addition, the peace lily helps by taking in moisture from the air through its leaves and what's better is that it doesn't need direct sunlight to thrive, meaning it is useful in battling mould spores in humid rooms. Mould in the home can happen when there is excess moisture, with warm rooms like bathrooms at particular risk of the issue, so the peace lily is the perfect plant to help filter it.

If you fancy welcoming one of these plants into your home, expect white flowers and glossy leaves - that is if you are green-fingered enough to keep it healthy. A word of warning, though, while we may enjoy the benefits of the plant, they are extremely toxic to both cats and dogs.
