The political maneuverings that led to this moment in Chile, as well as the horror and grief that’s occurred since, are complicated and devastating to comprehend. And yet, the Chilean documentarian and filmmaker Patricio Guzmán has dedicated his life and career to illuminating the country’s history. Through his films, the intricate networks of cause and effect are revealed via intimate and firsthand footage of what was happening in Chile in the 1970s.
“During my childhood, the presidents were always very serious. They’d pass through the office, collect their coins, and nothing would change,” Guzmán told me when we spoke over Zoom in late August. “When Allende arrived, that program ended and he opened the country to the people. New schools were built, new professions became obtainable.was finally a part of the government and institutions. That’s when I decided to make a film of what was going on.
