Jake Burton Carpenter was arguably one of the more fascinating figures in both sports and fashion history.
The Burton Snowboards founder, who died Wednesday at the age of 65 due to complications from cancer, was known as the godfather of snowboarding. Carpenter himself created the first snowboard in the Seventies and championed for the sport to enter the Olympic arena.
Alongside his wife Donna Carpenter, Carpenter grew Burton into a $150 million business. Burton has become a living embodiment of the culture and cool of winter sports.
