About eight Americans are testing positive every second as the U.S. continues to break daily records for COVID-19 cases, according to USA Today.
More than 700,000 new cases are being reported each day, and each of the last 5 days ranks in the top five during the“It’s still surging upward,” Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,Last week, the U.S. reported 4.9 million cases, which is more in 7 days than in April, May, June and July 2021 combined.
What’s more, about 1,200 hospitals, or 1 in 4, are reporting a “critical staffing shortage,” which is the largest number during the pandemic so far, the department said. More than 100 additional hospitals said they anticipate a shortage in the next week. In South Africa, where the Omicron variant was first detected, cases increased rapidly and then fell sharply. U.S. health officials say the surge in the U.S. could follow a similar pattern, with numbers declining by the end of January.
“I can’t predict accurately because no one can,” Fauci said. “But I would hope that by the time we get to the fourth week in January ... that we will start to see this coming down.”
